The history of Wroclaw’s dwarfs dates back to the 1980s, when the Orange Alternative movement was active in Wroclaw, founded by Waldemar “Major” Frydrych. Participants of this peaceful, humorous protest wore orange dwarf hats as a symbol of opposition to the authorities of the time and a way to ridicule the communist system.
Over time, dwarfs became the hallmark of the movement, and their images began to appear on city walls — especially in places where censorship painted over anti-government slogans.
